Southern Cross's own claims data puts the average dog vet visit at close to $500, before anything unexpected happens.
Southern Cross Pet Insurance's shows an average vet visit costs nearly $500 for dogs, according to the company's business development manager. Separately, Tower Insurance estimates the broader annual cost of caring for a dog in New Zealand with food, check-ups and extra care, before any unexpected vet bills, at around $1,686 a year.
A national NZ survey found the average annual cost of treating a dog is $499, with 82% of dogs requiring at least one vet visit a year. That's the routine end of the range. Once an accident or sudden illness is involved, costs escalate quickly. SPCA Pet Insurance notes around 80% of dog owners currently pay these costs entirely out of pocket, since less than 15% of NZ pets are insured overall.
It's also worth knowing that illness, not accident, drives most of what a dog vet visit is actually for: Southern Cross has reported that around 80% of the claims it pays out are for illness rather than accidental injury, a good reason to weigh illness cover, not just accident cover, when comparing policies.
