About FurWise

Is FurWise really free to use?

Yes. Comparing policies on FurWise never costs you anything, and you don't need to create an account to see your results.

How does FurWise make money?

FurWise is free for pet owners to use. We might earn a referral fee if you choose to buy a policy through a link on this site, we carry advertising from insurers and other pet-related businesses, and we might sell participating insurers anonymised, aggregated benchmarking reports built from de-identified usage data. None of these affect a provider's FurWise rating, ever. Read more.

Does advertising, a referral fee, or subscribing to FurWise's data reports change a provider's rating?

No. Every fact we show comes from published policy wording alone, before any commercial, advertising, or data-subscription relationship is considered. An advertised, referral-paying, or data-subscribing insurer is shown exactly the same way as any other.

Is FurWise affiliated with any insurer?

No. FurWise is an independent comparison tool. Every provider is shown using the same published policy facts, regardless of any commercial relationship.

How comparing works

Does FurWise compare prices?

No. FurWise compares policy features only: cover, exclusions, excess, co-payment, claim affordability and more. Price is never part of the comparison. See How It Works for the full methodology.

Why doesn't FurWise compare on price?

We acknowledge price can be a major factor. It's often the first thing anyone looks at. We just don't rate on it, because what you'd pay depends on things unique to you and your pet, for example their age, breed, health history, where you live, so it could shift from person to person and can't be compared fairly the same way published policy wording can. Weighing up which price is right for your situation also starts to edge into personal financial advice, which we're not licensed to give. What we can reliably show you is exactly what's covered, cited back to the real policy document, so you can weigh cost against cover yourself, not just a headline premium that might look cheap because of what features and cover it leaves out.

Where do the figures come from?

Every figure is drawn from a provider's published policy wording document. Each claim carries a citation, document title, version and section, so you can verify it yourself.

Can I choose which policies to compare?

Yes. Pick up to four policies to compare side by side, or choose a hypothetical claims scenario to see what each policy would actually pay out. You control what you're comparing and how it's sorted. FurWise does not rank or score providers for you.

What happens if a provider's data isn't fully loaded yet?

We say so plainly on the comparison card. FurWise never fabricates a figure to fill a gap.

What happens if there is something wrong with a comparison?

We acknowledge we might get it wrong from time to time. If we do, just let us know, and we will correct any mistake right away providing it can be cited in the providers policy wording.

Does FurWise have breed-specific guidance?

Yes. For a set of breeds including dogs like Labradors and Golden Retrievers and cats like Maine Coons and Ragdolls, FurWise flags known breed-linked health conditions so you can check whether each policy covers them, because those are the conditions that breed is most commonly predisposed to. See our breed guides for the detail behind each one.

Where do the vet cost figures on FurWise come from?

From primary New Zealand sources. NZ veterinary clinics and hospitals, the Veterinary Council of New Zealand, the New Zealand Veterinary Association, Massey University's peer-reviewed New Zealand Veterinary Journal, SPCA New Zealand and NZ pet insurers themselves, each cited individually on our cost of care pages. We don't use overseas statistics or aggregator / blog figures.

Using the results

Do I need to give my email or phone number to see my results?

No. Your comparison appears on screen the moment you finish telling us about your pet. We will never ask for your email or phone number to "unlock it" or have it emailed to you. You only need to provide your personal details to Furwise if you choose to request a quote from a specific insurer.

Will someone call or email me afterwards?

Not from using the comparison tool itself. Nothing happens automatically on your behalf just for seeing your results. If you choose to request a quote from a specific insurer, you'll explicitly opt in to that insurer contacting you or being redirected to complete the quote yourself; either way, nothing is sent to an insurer without your named, explicit consent. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Is this personalised financial advice?

No. Any information shown on FurWise is not financial advice. FurWise is a features comparison tool. It's a helpful starting point so you can understand how pet insurance policies in New Zealand work. If you are still unsure about what might be right for you after using FurWise, we strongly recommend you seek independent advice from a financial adviser about your specific situation.

Do you store my pet's information?

Only if you request a quote from an insurer. Pet and policy details you enter in the comparison tool live only in your browser session and disappear when you close or refresh the tab. If you upload a current policy document or certificate of insurance, it's processed to extract your cover details and deleted immediately afterwards, it isn't stored by FurWise. The only exception is if you choose to request a quote from an insurer: at that point, the details you confirm are sent to the insurer you named. Full details in our Privacy Policy

Can I compare free pet insurance too?

We currently compare two Free pet insurance options.

What if I already have cover in place?

You can compare your existing pet insurance cover to other covers available. Simply let us know you have existing cover when doing a comparison. You can then give us your existing cover details and we will let you know how it compares to other covers.

Does FurWise cover both dogs and cats?

Yes. The comparison tool covers both species, with a comprehensive breed list for each (100+ dog breeds, 45+ cat breeds).
